The built-in Videos app in the iPhone is shockingly barebones. To me, it’s almost useless. Like many geeks, I’ve taken the time to manually bundle in all the stock iOS apps I find no use for in a folder and send it to the last screen. Apps like Watch, Stocks and yes, Videos are one of them.

If you’re like me, you download movies from the Internet, and they usually come in MP4 or MKV format. But of course, I can’t just transfer these files to my iPhone or iPad and expect them to play as is. I could buy the $15 Mac app called WALTR and let it convert every video on the fly. But I don’t have the patience to attach the iPhone every time I want to transfer a video file.

So I do it wirelessly. On my iPhone I use VLC, and on my iPad I use Infuse (because it has an awesome media center interface that works best on the iPad).
If you’re also looking for a really easy, wireless way of transferring video files to your iOS device – well, good news – you’ve come to the right place.

How to Transfer Videos from Your PC to iPhone without iTunes

• VLC on iOS has an iffy past. Its history is riddled with sudden takedowns from the App Store, but it looks like its current incarnation is here to stay. I’ve been using it for the past six months without any problems.
• I’d say VLC is the best option for syncing and playing video files on iOS devices because not only is it free based on an open source project, but it will basically play any kind of file you throw at it. Yes, even on the iPhone.
• To transfer the video file you’ll first need to make sure both your computer and the iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
• Then open the VLC app on your iPhone, and tap the red traffic cone icon we’ve come to adore over all these years.

From the sidebar tap the “Sharing via WiFi” button.

It will now change to show an IP address and a “.local” address.
Go to your PC, and in a modern browser like Chrome, type in either of those addresses in the URL bar.

This will take you to a page where you can either select the video files you want to transfer using the “+” icon or just drop in the files.

Any file you drag and drop will instantly start transferring to your iOS device.
One interesting thing about this feature is that it even allows you to transfer any file from the VLC app on the iOS device to your desktop as well.
Note: VLC is chock-full of ways to transfer files to the app. You can use the iTunes app, connect to any server on the PC (Including Plex) or just copy any file from a locally-shared network. I’ve used the Wi-Fi method here because it’s the most accessible and easiest to use.

How to Transfer Video Files Over Wi-Fi to iPad Via Infuse

With Infuse, the process is slightly different.

After launching the app, tap the “three dotted menu” button on the top-right and then select “Add files.”

This will bring up a list of all the different ways you can add files, from shared servers to iTunes Sync.

In our case, tap the “via Browser” button.

Again, you’ll see two different kinds of IP addresses.
Go to your desktop and enter one of these addresses in your browser.

Either use the “+” button to add files or just drag them in the page to start the transfer.

Once the transfer is done, you’ll be able to see the file in the app.

VLC vs Infuse

The only reason I’d recommend Infuse is because of its UI, especially on the iPad. Infuse will automatically add metadata, cover art and things like synopsis for every file you add. It will even automatically sort TV shows into seasons and episodes. Plus, Infuse has great features like automatic subtitle download.
But as I said, if you’re looking for simplicity, you can never go wrong with VLC.

How to Adjust Volume and Brightness in Smaller Increments on Your Mac

It often happens to us that we want the volume or the brightness to be at an exact level on our Macs so that it is as perfect as we want. Unfortunately, though, Mac does not easily let us specify exact values for the volume and brightness levels. At such times you just have to compromise and work with whatever has been provided to you.

Luckily, with a neat trick, you can now change both volume and brightness on your Mac in smaller increments and to the level you want. The trick allows you to change the levels in as small as 25% of the default bar. That means you can now set your volume at 25%, 50%, 75%, and so on instead of the default 100%, 200%, and so on.

Ensure that your Mac is not set to mute.

1. Bring down the volume level to half of the total level so you can see the trick working. You can do that by pressing the Volume Down or Volume Up, whatever is appropriate in your situation.

2. Now, here comes the trick. Hold down the “Shift” and “Option” keys together on your keyboard, and then press either Volume Up or Volume Down.

You should notice that the volume now either increases or decreases in smaller increments unlike before. It takes four taps on the Volume button to fill-up a bar which used to get filled-up in just one tap before.

3. You can now keep on doing this until you are satisfied.

There has not been much buzz about this feature in the Apple world, but this small feature does a really great job for you.

Changing the brightness level in smaller increments can be done the same way as the volume. Here are the steps.

1. Bring down the brightness to half of the total size so you can easily see the changes.

2. Hold down the “Shift” and “Option” keys together, and press the button for either increasing or decreasing the brightness. Like the volume bar, you will notice that it now increases or decreases in smaller increments than before.

3. That should let you adjust the brightness on your Mac according to your needs.

We all know that the default settings are not perfect sometimes, and tinkering around helps us get exactly what we want. This is one of those default things that does not work well for all users.

Transfer iTunes to Android using Google Play Music

Google Play Music provides cloud storage for up to 50,000 songs, accessible from both your desktop and your phone, and, best of all, it's compatible with iTunes. There are various dedicated apps for transferring your iTunes music to your Android phone in the Play Store. We tested several and found that iSyncr was the simplest and most efficient.
To start, download the iSyncr app from the Play Store to your phone, and the desktop app to your PC. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable, then open the iSyncr desktop app.

iSyncr lets you choose which media to sync with your device.

It should automatically open a window asking which files you want to sync with your device. Tick the box next to iTunes and then click Synchronise. iSyncr will then transfer your iTunes files to your phone.

If that's the case, you'll need to invest in a microSD card, if your device supports them, or be selective about what you copy over.

If you don't want to rely on a third-party app to use iTunes with your Android phone, then you can manually transfer the files to your device.
Connect your phone to your PC with a USB cable. Open Windows Explorer, and locate the iTunes folder on your computer.
Drag and drop it into your device's music folder to copy the files onto your phone. The music will be visible in your chosen music player app once the transfer is complete.

This method is simple and efficient, but, as above, is limited by the available storage on your device or its mircoSD card.

It has real-time protection, customizable updates, privacy reports, a Web shield, call and SMS message filtering, a firewall and application manager. If your device is stolen, you can do everything except access or restore your contacts – because it doesn’t include a backup feature. Yet, you can locate your device and wipe or lock it remotely, set off an alarm, and even receive a notification if your SIM card is changed.

Now for the more: The App Disguiser is a unique feature that lets you choose custom names for your apps so that if your device is stolen, it will be harder for thieves to find the apps containing your personal data. Another great feature is called “Stealth Mode”. Once the anti-theft feature has been enabled on your device, the Avast! app icon will be hidden so that the thief can’t detect it; they’ll never even know that they’re being tracked.

GadgetTrak

iOS users, if you’re looking for something only for your device, check out VirusBarrier. This app is $2.99 and can be used to scan email attachments and other files as needed. It checks for spyware, trojans, adware, hacker tools, dialers, keyloggers, and more. VirusBarrier even works with remote services like DropBox, iDisk, and WebDAV.

Due to the limitations of iOS, this app cannot automatically scan files or schedule automatic scans; this is probably the reason why most of the abovementioned apps are mainly for Android.

Webroot SecureWeb

Here we go, iOS users, an application that you can use too! Webroot SecureWeb is available for iOS and Android, and mainly focuses on securing your Web browsing experience. On the iOS app you can browse using the integrated and secure tabbed browser and safe search feature, which identifies phishing and malicious websites. There are no anti-theft features included, unlike the Android version.

10 Tips to Conserve Your Smartphone Battery

Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung and other global brands have come up with smartphones equipped with powerful mobile operating systems such as Google’s Android, Nokia’s Symbian, Apple’s iOS, etc, that allows users to play games, listen to mp3s, snap pictures, have access to the Net and even stream videos.

Given their diverse range of capabilities and multi-functionality running on a mobile (as in on-the-go) platform, it’s no wonder that battery life has always been a concern for developers, manufacturers and the users themselves. On average, most smartphone batteries last between one and two days before being completely depleted, and in need of a recharge.

While we wait for the hardware development to catch up, the alternative will be to conserve battery life. As it is with our energy levels, battery life can be effectively utilized and managed, leaving nothing to go to waste. Without a battery charger or a spare battery with you everywhere you go, you’ll have to make due with minimizing the consumption of battery juice.

Here are 10 essential tips how you can conserve your smartphone’s battery.

1. Turn Off Vibrations

Vibrations are great for notifying you about incoming calls or messages when you’re in the theatre, meetings or other places where it’s necessary to keep the phone silent. In places where it doesn’t matter, it will be better for you to use your ringtone as notification if you want to keep your smartphones on longer.

Vibrations actually use up more power than ringtones. The sounds produced by ringtones are just very tiny vibrations in your smartphone’s speaker. Compare that to the shaking of the entire phone via vibrating a smart weight, playing a ringtone definitely zaps less of your battery. The same applies for using vibration for tactile feedback. If you don’t think it’s necessary, then disable vibrations or at the very least, lessen the magnitude of the vibrations.

It’s obvious that dimming your screen will reduce your smartphone’s power consumption since we all have to activate the screen whenever we use our phones. Nickel-based batteries should be charged (to the full amount) when they’re more or less out of power, and not when there’s still a good amount of energy left.

Li-Ion batteries have the longest life cycle among the three types of batteries but they also need to be charged more frequently (even when the battery is not fully used up) to maintain its original capacity. Hence, you should ensure that those particular apps are closed when you really don’t need them. A more extreme way is to disable location services when prompted by these apps. 8. No Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G/4G When Not in Use

Energy is consumed whenever your smartphone searches for signals, Wi-Fi, 3G or Bluetooth etc. When the reception is poor, the phone will continue scanning to attain a good connection. Repeated searches for these signals can easily make your battery level drop a notch.

What I’m saying is that you should turn off your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you don’t need to be connected. One convenient way to do it is to switch to ‘Airplane Mode’ or just switch your phone off when you know you can’t get any signal.

On the other hand, when you need good reception for your smartphone, place or position your phone in high connectivity zones. This will prevent your smartphones from constantly seeking for a connection and wasting your precious battery power switching from one signal to the other.

9. Minimize Notifications

With constant connectivity to the Internet, we tend to get notifications on our smartphones all the time, be it updates on the latest news, emails, high scores from games, add-ons for apps etc. But I’m sure that you would only want to be notified on the more essential stuffs like new text messages, or messages from Whatsapp.
