Cloud: How Safe Are Cloud Solutions from Hackers?

Cloud: How Safe Are Cloud Solutions from Hackers?

How Safe Are Cloud Solutions from Hackers?

Cloud computing and cloud storage are some of the most recent big developments in the technology sector, with millions of users tapping into the service and making the most of offsite solutions for either themselves or their company. That being said, you are trusting your data and/or computing to be done off-site where it is relatively out of your control. This leads to the question of “Just how secure are cloud solutions from those who want to get at my data?” To answer that, we’d need to look at it from both the server end and the user end, and ask a few other questions.

User-End Security

A lot of how much you can depend on the security of cloud storage depends on you. If a hacker gets into your user data and uses it to log into some of your accounts, even the safest measures by a company looking to keep you safe won’t be of any help.
Your biggest risk is if a hacker manages through one method or another get ahold of your password and username and then uses that to directly log into your account and create all sorts of problems for you, possible even trying to steal your account outright. If this should happen your financial data is also likely at risk due to the method you likely paid for the cloud service, so you need to change your password to a strong one and change it often.
Also you should keep an eye out on who you share your files with, otherwise a hacker might take advantage of someone else and use that connection to get at you in some manner over the cloud. Try not to give permission where it is not needed and you should be relatively safe, but not completely immune to hackers.

Server-End Security

Most information technology companies take the security of their customers very seriously, knowing that if there were ever even a minor data breach that were to get publicized enough, they would lose costumers or users by at least the hundreds of thousands. In addition, many of the companies that offer cloud computing are the safe ones that have their own security departments and will have the best minds in the field constantly figuring out ways to think ahead of hackers.
However, hackers will often work together to crack a server with a large enough reward, and as we have learned from the recent celebrity leaks, cloud storage is not invulnerable. Also, a single employee can easily create a major breach whether it is through malice or negligence. That is not a risk to take lightly, and hackers will take advantage of every last thing they can find (or make new breaches when there are none readily apparent).
That all being said, hackers are not the only thing you should think about, and you need to focus for at least a little while on how much you trust the company you are having store your data. Do you think they are going to use it themselves for research purposes? How do you think they would react if they found out if they got hacked? Would they warn their customers?

Public Networks

You should also note that, if you use a cloud solution, that means you are going to need a constant internet connection. If you are using a laptop or smartphone on the go this likely means that you will be using a public network. Public networks are dangerous, especially with the amount of data that cloud solutions send and receive all of the time.
On unprotected public networks hackers in the vicinity with extremely simple setups can read all of the data is sent over the network, and this can include passwords, usernames, financial information, and many of the things that are sent over cloud computing and storage. This makes using cloud computing unprotected very risky in public places.
If you really want to use it, though, and there are certainly benefits (laptops often don’t have much storage space compared to other computers), then you will like want to use a solid Virtual Private Network. With it your computer will establish a safe connection with a secure outside server that no one else will be able to access. Over this connection you will be able to send your cloud computing data and you will be able to safely do whatever you need to while out in public.

What Will You Use It For?

A lot of how much you should rely on the security of cloud solutions depends on what you use them for. Most hackers are not really interested in your music collection or your family photos from that trip to Venice last year. They will however be interested in documents relating to your place of business, any financial or personal data that you might have, or anything incriminating that they can use against someone in a desperate situation. If you have extremely sensitive data, you’re better off using a flash drive and a safe.
Therefore try to write down a list of different processes you’d use cloud computing for and what types of data you’d store on external servers. If there is nothing worrying, then you’re probably safe. If not, then take a closer look at other options because hackers might use it should the worst happen.

Conclusion

So, to answer the title question in short:  Not particularly, although you can take some decent precautions so it is fine for basic use. Thank you for reading and I hope that this article helps you make a more informed decision about which services you buy for your computer.

Technology Observation: Women Write Better Code than Men, reveals new study

Technology Observation: Women Write Better Code than Men, reveals new study

Women Write Better Code than Men, reveals new study

The study revealed by American Researchers is based on 1.4 Million users of the open source program sharing service “Github”.

The new study also revealed that Students paid distinct attention to “Pull Requests” made on the service by women were found to be highly rated than those made by men.

Also, when the gender of some user’s was visible on their Github or other site, their pull request acceptance rate plunged down by 9.3 percent and also taking it below the rate for men.

Also, this research needs proper examination. It seems that the results disclosed doesn’t have been judged by other experts.

The team assumed that “Our results suggest that although women on Github may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless.”

Github is a web based developer community which doesn’t make it mandatory for users to mention their gender. As per Wikipedia, Github is having nearly 10 Million users.

Now the question may have popped in your mind that “How did researchers were able to carry this survey when Github’s user’s gender was not known? The Team who carried this survey were able to distinguish the genders of about 1.4 Million users because the users used their GitHub’s email on other social networking websites like Google+.

Although researchers admitted that this was a privacy risk but said that they wont reveal the raw data.

So, now you came to know that women can also code better than men. If you liked this article, share it.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY REVIEW: Soon, Shoes That can Charge Your Smartphone By Walking

 LATEST TECHNOLOGY REVIEW

Scientist from the University of Wisconsin Madison have developed this technology which uses kinetic energy of a person walking to produce electricity. Currently, it is able to create 10 watts of power per square meter covered. But, it is maintained that it could create 10 Kw per day.

Soon, Shoes That can Charge Your Smartphone By walking

Tom Krupenkin, professor of mechanical engineering, and senior scientist J Ashley Taylor explained this technology that how it could catch the energy of human motion to power mobile electronic devices.

Credit: Tom Krupenkin/InStep NanoPower

WISC posted on their website “The researchers’ bubbler device—which contains no moving mechanical parts—consists of two flat plates separated by a small gap that’s filled with a conductive liquid. The bottom plate has tiny holes through it as well as a dielectric-coated electrode on its surface. Pressurized gas blows up through the holes in the bottom plate, forming bubbles on each hole. These bubbles grow until they’re large enough to touch the top plate, which causes the bubble to collapse”.
This mind blowing technology allow a energy harvester fixed in footwear to catch energy generated during the walking and store the energy produced for utilization.
Mr. Krupenkin also said that this small amount of energy is capable to charge different gadgets which includes smartphones, tablets, laptops and flashlights. Almost all smartphones need less than 2 watts of energy.
So, this all about the upcoming technology which could let you charge your device while walking. This could be really beneficial for the military personnel who carry batteries for radios or other systems, now this futuristic technology will ease their difficulties. Robots Could Leave Half Of The World Unemployed, says Experts

Expert namely Moshe Vardi told American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), “We are approaching a time when machines will be able to outperform humans at almost any task.

“I believe that society needs to confront this question before it is upon us: If machines are capable of doing almost any work humans can do, what will humans do? The question I want to put forward is, ‘Does the technology we are developing ultimately benefit mankind?”

Last year same warnings were issued by Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and Elon Musk. Stephen Hawking warned that Artificial Intelligence “could spell the end of the human race” and Elon Musk said it portrays “our biggest existential threat”.

Vardi maintained that machines will obviously make our life easier but humanity will have to face a tough challenge.

“I do not find this a promising future, as I do not find the prospect of leisure-only life appealing,” he said. “I believe that work is essential to human well being.”
Vardi has also observed that what will happen if the Artificial Intelligence will take place of human labor. Vardi also composed the topic for the Atlantic. In this topic he questioned whether future needs us or not.

He describes the problems that are with Artificial Intelligence, namely the economic restructuring that would be needed for this type of society and that too for our own welfare. He further said “People tell me that my concerns apply only to a future that is so far away that we need not worry about it,”.

“I find this answer to be unacceptable. 2045 is merely a generation away from us. We cannot shirk responsibility from concerns for the welfare of the next generation. We cannot blindly pursue the goal of machine intelligence without pondering its consequences.”

TECHNOLOGY: Bluetooth Devices Can be Tracked Directly over The Internet Soon

Bluetooth Devices Can be Tracked Directly over The Internet Soon
We all have gadgets having Bluetooth based sensors but we are not able to connect it directly to the Internet. Almost all devices have Bluetooth connectivity like basic mobiles and smartphones, however they need another device in order to link these devices to the Internet. In other words we can say, you must be also present there while carrying some processes.

Bluetooth Devices Can be Tracked Directly over The Internet Soon
They primarily require an intermediary device to gain Internet access in order to control it from our home. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has launched an architecture  which provides Bluetooth devices direct access to the Internet. Earlier, you required an intermediary device in order to allow connection to the web but Bluetooth SIG made it possible for a connection to the cloud.

Although it will take some time for smartphone manufacturers to enable these features in the devices. Bluetooth Special Interest Group announced that, you will be soon able to connect to an internet gateway without requiring your gadget or smartphones. It further said that all upcoming versions of its connection will permit any Bluetooth Sensor to transmit data to the cloud and back again.

This Special feature will allow users to monitor and control fixed Bluetooth Sensors from a distant place.

Google, Movidius to Bring Deep Learning to Mobile Devices

Google, Movidius to Bring Deep Learning to Mobile Devices

google-movidius-machine-learning-mobile-neural-network
Movidius on Wednesday announced that it's working with Google to put deep learning on mobile devices.
Google will source Movidius' latest flagship chip -- the MA2450 -- and software development environment, and will contribute to Movidius' neural network technology road map in return.
That could result in smartphones and other mobile devices that will be able to understand images and audio swiftly and accurately.

The Movidius Technology

The MA2450 is the most powerful iteration of Movidius' Myriad 2 vision processor unit, which the company said is the only commercial solution available to perform complex neural network computations.
The Myriad 2 is the first always-on vision processor, Movidius said.
It has a programmable architecture and comes with the Myriad Development Kit, or MDK, which includes a software development framework. That lets developers incorporate proprietary functions and build arbitrary processing pipelines while leveraging the vision, imaging, and linear algebra software libraries and reference vision processing pipeline examples Movidius provides, all as source code.
The MDK includes all necessary programming and debugging tools.
Movidius's Myriad VPU processor powers Google's Project Tango.
"We can expect to see run-time deep neural networks for speech-to-text, vision and many other smart machine applications running in phones, cameras, automobiles, medical devices and others because the DNN models can be downloaded and run disconnected from the cloud,"Gartner Fellow Tom Austin said.
"Remember that working with Google on a project doesn't necessarily translate into products," cautioned Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research. "However, this has the potential for almost any device and extends well beyond just facial recognition; this is machine learning."
Facial recognition and retinal scans the technology enables "could significantly increase the level of security over fingerprints and even help identify people," he told TechNewsWorld.
Facial recognition could be used in two-factor authentication, and Google could bake it into Android as it did with fingerprint IDs, suggested Wayne Lam, a principal analyst at IHS Technology.
Google also could apply the technology to home security platforms, he told TechNewsWorld. "Think Nest and other IoT uses."

Potential Uses for the Technology

Banks will begin using smart machines widely, and a report Gartner's Austin co-authored suggests most banks will invest in six main types of smart machines during the next few years.
The smart machines resulting from Google's team-up with Movidius could make wireless banking more secure, he told TechNewsWorld.
Other possible uses include authenticating users or admins signing in remotely to an enterprise network, and tracking and authenticating users for security purposes and for provisioning or deprovisioning as needed.
"Facial recognition and retinal scans are much more secure and user-friendly than any of the more common security solutions," Tirias Research's McGregor said. "This could allow users to log in and begin using platforms in a secure manner effortlessly."
The technology also could be used in wearables and industrial applications in the medical and industrial automation fields, where the Internet of Things might come into play, he suggested.

A New Trend Emerges

"This capability is not limited to the Movidius solution," McGregor pointed out. "Qualcomm is doing it in conjunction with its image signal processor, and this could be done within most SoCs by leveraging the ISP, DSP, GPU, VPU and CPU resources."
Microsoft, Apple "and a whole range of social sites like Facebook, ... Amazon, Baidu, IBM and a few thousand other firms" might follow suit, Gartner's Austin suggested.
As global smartphone sales slow, noted IHS's Lam, "we'll see more and more efforts to create differentiated value for platforms such as Android and iOS just to keep up with the furious pace of competition and innovations.
